Nuance bids for software firm
Documenting clinical findings with the help of PowerScribe speech recognition (SR) software may soon be a reality if Nuance acquires Vocada, as expected. Nuance announced the proposed deal Oct. 18, noting that an agreement to acquire Vocada had been signed. No further details were provided. This is Nuance's second corporate move of this type in three weeks.

October 22, 2007 - Nuance Communications Inc. recently announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Vocada Inc., a leading provider of critical test result management (CTRM) solutions, aiming to help diagnostic departments in hospitals achieve greater patient safety, better patient outcomes and higher staff productivity by bringing efficiency and verification to the communication process surrounding critical test results.

A few years ago,at the suggestion of our then CMIO and with the support of several influential physicians and the acting CIO, VCU Health System (Richmond, Va.) investigated Dragon voice-to-text technology from Nuance Communications. After several demos with excellent physician participation, the IT Steering Committee approved going forward with the purchase of 50 licenses (at a cost of about $55,000) for the Dragon voice-to-text application.
