Speech Solution Delivers Unique Ability to Control
Device by Voice, Simplifies Access to Mobile Content
3GSM World Congress 2007, BARCELONA, Spain,
February 13, 2007 – Nuance Communications, Inc.
(NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced that Nuance Voice Control,
a mobile search and messaging service powered by speech
technology, is now available for Palm® Treo™ smartphones.
With the Nuance Voice Control service, Treo users can
easily dictate and send email or text messages, create
calendar entries, dial a contact, and search the Web for
business listings, news, weather, stock quotes, sport
scores and more. Nuance will demonstrate the benefits of
speech-enabled mobile search and communications on Treo
smartphones in the Palm Pavilion and in the Nuance booth
(Hall 2, Booth 2H48) at the 3GSM World Congress 2007,
being held this week in Barcelona, Spain.
Treo smartphones seamlessly combine a full-featured
mobile phone with email, an organizer, messaging and Web
access capabilities in a compact yet easy-to-use device
that allows users to simplify and organize their business
and personal lives all in one place.(1) The
Nuance Voice Control service enhances the device with a
speech-based user interface. Treo users now have the
unique and powerful ability to control their Treo
smartphone with their voice instead of using their thumbs
or the stylus.
With Nuance Voice Control, users press one button on
their mobile phone and simply speak their request. Nuance
Voice Control functionality for Treo users includes the
following:
- Dictate and send email or text messages
- Add appointments to the calendar
- Surf the Web
- Access top news stories and sports
- Get the weather for any city
- Find stock quotes and movie times
- Conduct open-ended Web searches (for example, “What
is the population of Barcelona?”)
- Find the location and phone numbers for nearby
businesses
- Place calls by name or number from the phone’s
contact list
“From fast and efficient data input to hands-free
information access, Nuance Voice Control offers an array
of features that can enhance the overall user experience
for Treo customers,” said Mike Rank, director of developer
relations for Palm, Inc. “Treo smartphones are marketed to
mobile professionals who need access to corporate
information as well as to mobile consumers who want access
to personal information and resources on the go. Speech is
a natural interface for both audiences to interact with
our devices.”
“Palm has engineered a significant move forward in
mobile computing by delivering a lightweight and stylish –
yet powerful – device that meets the needs of consumers,
mobile professionals and businesses,” said Michael
Thompson, vice president and general manager, telco,
search and communications, Nuance. “In addition to making
it faster and easier for Palm users to access information
on the go, we are working with Palm for specialized
applications in key vertical markets such as law
enforcement databases and patient record keeping systems
for the healthcare field.”
